| Tribal Development Project (TDF) |
|
The Tribal Development Fund, set up by NABARD, aims at implementing integrated tribal development programmes through the "WADI" approach with community's participation. IDF has selected five villages in Challakere taluk, Chitradurga district. The villages were selected broadly on the guidelines of NABARD for TDF. The aim of the project is to help 820 families mainly of these tribal people and few from other social strata with lesser holdings (less than 5 acres) to practice sustainable agriculture including silvi-horticulture, animal husbandry and income generating activities. The project seeks to provide sustainable livelihood opportunities to the tribal beneficiaries at large and other vulnerable families in the area avoiding seasonal or permanent migration. All the identified families are doing rain fed farming as most of them do not have sources of irrigation. The specific objectives of the project are;
- Livelihood promotion through agriculture, horticulture and forestry.
- Increasing the agricultural productivity through appropriate technologies like soil conservation, water harvesting technologies and tree based farming.
- To improve the socio economic condition of women and other socially challenged sections and to reduce migration.
- Processing of fruit produce and establishment of Producers' Collective for value addition and market reach.
The Project started in September 2009. Land based activities and planting of horticulture and forestry plants will be completed in two years but other supports for maintenance of Wadis, encouragement to IGAs and hand holding to CBOs will continue for another four years. |
