A development organisation shaped by practice
IDF is a development organisation working with rural communities to strengthen sustainable agriculture and resilient livelihoods.
Founded in 2001 by development bankers as a social enterprise, IDF has evolved through field experience across rural livelihoods, agriculture, finance, enterprise and community development.
Our work brings together social understanding and economic thinking — helping people strengthen their capabilities, make informed choices and create pathways to greater economic opportunity.

What has remained consistent is the belief that stronger livelihoods require both human capability and economic opportunity.
We work alongside communities rather than simply delivering solutions to them. Our role may involve building capability, facilitating access to finance and markets, developing enterprises, strengthening collective action or creating institutions where they are needed.

Experience has shaped the organisation
Over time, IDF has worked across different contexts, tested different approaches and built capabilities in response to changing needs.
That experience continues to shape how we understand problems, design responses and work with others.
